Italian Insult: Mezza Sega

I know I’ve already posted two lists of Italian swear words – first my favorites and then your suggestions – but I received this gem a few months ago from a friend, and I knew I had to share it with you. It’s just too good to keep to myself.

I bring you an Italian insult worthy of its own post:

mezza sega

The note I got from my friend, who visited Italy over the summer, explains it perfectly:

Only the best insult ever, it means, literally, half a saw. But in every day use, it means ‘half a wanker’ — somebody who is so lazy, they can’t even finish their own job.

Now my only task is to find an excuse to use this one. Often.

My boss is Sicilian and when he used this phrase to refer to one of his employees (!) his wife told me that he called him “half a jerk off.”

Ha! So, is that employee really lazy? Or do you think your boss was trying to say something else?? ;)
