I had planned on switching to a credit union this summer before this trip came up, but then it was so last-minute (the trip) that I didn't have time. I'm definitely going to be switching when I get home, though, so that by the time we come back in late August I don't have to even think about dealing with that bank again. (Grrr...)

Don't know if the customer service would have been any better, but I have a credit union. I am in love with them and haven't needed a bank in forever. Again, don't know if it would have made any difference, but I HOPE I never get the chance to find out :) Good thing for hubby!!

No, never got the card back. I suppose I could go back to that bank, but I kind of think the machine destroyed it - that's what they're supposed to do, anyway.

So sorry you had soldi agita!
For the past few years I never leave the States without a gift debit card issued by a bank. It's better than a travel card and the rate is excellent whenever you make a debit purchase. They are preloaded with $500, $1000, whatever and I have never had a problem using them anywhere in Europe, even for the smallest purchases. And, if you happen to lose them or they are stolen, they are supposed to be easily replaceable. Lucky you - a hubby to wire cash!

OMG. It happened to me in the town I live (in Romania). The same "temporary out of order" and "lovely" blue screen. The next day I went to the bank to which the ATM belonged (it happened IN a bank) and the lady gave me the look and comment "are you sure this is your card?" HUH? [my card is issued by a US bank] After several 'debates' i had to have my US fax the Romanian bank my details and 1 week later I got the card back. Needless to say I asked my bank to issue another one for me and cancel the "eaten" one.

When we travel abroad we take hubby's debit card wt us. It's issued by a Romanian bank and if it gets eaten he can get a new one home.
