Hi, Bhavna:

Central Florence is very small, so if you're staying near the river you're already in the historic center (and vice versa). It just depends on the view you want. :)

Ciao,
Jessica

Hi there - loving to browse through your pages for planning my trip. I have a question - Is it better to stay on the river side or somewhere in central florence for the first time visit to Florence which is not a honeymoon.

You have missed one of the hotels with I personally believe to have the best view!

Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni n. 1
http://www.tornabuoni1.com/site/index.php

I have stayed here every time I have visited Firenze. It is a small hotel with about a dozen rooms. Three things make this hotel stand out...almost every room has a view of either the Arno or Duomo...and the rooftop terrace...and location.

Several of the rooms have their own terrace or enclosed garden with views of the beautiful city of Florence. The hotel is actually located at the top of an ancient tower of an old fortified palazzo, so you "tower" above the rooftops.

The roof itself has two separate sections. One section has a completly unobstructed view of the Duomo and the wonderful red rooftops of Florence. The other section has an unobstructed view of the Arno, Ponte Vecchio, and the hills around Florence up to Piazza Michelangelo. The hotel serves breakfast on the roof and has an honesty bar at night. With the honesty bar, you can serve yourself from a variety of wines or liquors. The "honesty" party is whether you fill out the form with your room number.

As for the location, every time you step out the hotel's massive wooden doors you are directly across from the Ferragamo store and museum. Some of the other hotel's neighbors include Versace and Dior. In addition, a taxi stand is a half block away. The Ponte Vecchio is a 10 minute walk...although the view from Ponte Santa Trinita (which is next to the hotel) is better. And one last plus, the double-decker bus from City Sightseeing (I highly recommend them for Florence) has a stop directly in front of the hotel!

Some of my photos from the rooftop. Enjoy!

Hi,
I haven't stayed at the Hotel Hermitage since the early 90's because it has gone up out of my price category. However, I did stay there two or three times, and it is very nice. Also at least once, maybe more, I did have a room with a small view of the river, and also the sound of the noise when Italy won a World Cup game or something important like that as the cars raced by on the street below. Also one time I could watch from my window as one of the carts sellers use was set up step by step and perhaps more interesting taken down and pulled off--really interesting. I took pictures that I know are lost in many slides of early trips. I don't know if these carts can be set up there any more.
