If you are in Venice during the hot months an almost free thing is to go to one of the outdoor bars along the Zattere. For the price of a glass of Prosecco or a Spritz you can sit in the evening breezes, look across the Giudecca to the flood-lit Redentore, watch the boats on the canal and relax.

Most churches in Venice you wouldn't ever know they are churches because they blend with all the other buildings.

Obviously free, the city is safe, no crowds, and it's just beautiful.
