Yes, I mentioned the no-cappuccino-after-11am thing at the top of the article, just above where the list of coffee drinks starts. It has to do with how Italians think milk screws up digestion. :)

Great site! Really love to read these articles, very recognizable : )

I do have something to add to this coffee chapter. You may have mentioned it, but I didn't see it; Italians only drink "lattes" or other milk based coffee drinks with breakfast generally. I have actually been told on occasion that they wouldn't serve me cappuccino with my lunch, since that's "not done". Kind of like how Americans generally drink orange juice only with breakfast, but Dutch people drink it during cocktail hour or sitting on a terrace on a sunny afternoon.

I'll be back to read more of your great and entertaining articles!

This was very helpful. I am staying here in Italy for 4 months now and I sometimes help in my fiance's restaurant. I am still learning Italian but this will definitely my guide to the locals ordering coffee. Thank you very much!

Just added this link to my Facebook group -- what a great explanation of coffee in Italy! I can't even begin to count the number of times I've ordered something and didn't receive what I thought I had asked for! :)

Hello from Italy!

When you talk about caffè macchiato, you forget to talk about "macchiato freddo" (cold stained). Is the same as a caffè macchiato but milk is added cold.

If you ask for a "caffè macchiato" usually you receive a "macchiato caldo" (hot stained) but the waiter could ask "macchiato freddo o macchiato caldo?"...

Thank you! bye

Hey hey hey.. I'm Italian, from Lecce, and we in Lecce use a lot to drink, usually in summer, "caffè in ghiaccio" or "coffè with ice" . It's not the same as caffè freddo or granita di caffè, cos' you put the hot coffe in a glass with a lot of ice and this makes the coffe have a very good flavour. and also you can try caffè in ghiaccio with Latte di Mandorla (almond milk) instead of sugar; really delicious!
But remember: you can find caffè in ghiaccio only in Lecce, I don't know why but that's how things stand.

Ciao!!!
See you in a bar in Lecce :)

Jess,

Great list!!! I have always been a coffee drinker- the stronger the better, so I fit right in over there. Except when I order my cappo in the afternoon ;) I can handle the dirty looks!

@Rene - Good point. ;)

@Kelly - It's *so* perfect for the cold weather... And it's kind of a meal in and of itself, too. Bonus!
