Thanks for the post. You're right, going to Italy can make you into a foodie -- I just went to Sicily a couple months back and have since been kind of obsessed. I now have been brushing up a lot on my Italian cooking and trying hard to learn Italian (independently online at Babbel.com (http://www.babbel.com).) and it's been interesting to learn about the culture, language and food all in tandem. I totally could've used this article before I went though! Thanks again.

Great article!! I am lucky for living Puglia, a region which produces the most diverse fruit and vegetables.
I buy food almost every day at the market and my little tip would be to go to the market just a little bit before it finishes (hoping you still find some food left!).
Vendors are willing to get rid of all the remaining fruit and vegetables and they will give you lots of food for a very good price.
Also, there will be less people and you will have a chance to talk to vendors and ask for recipes (this is my favorite part when i go to the market).
Enjoy the markets!

great tips - especially the one about letting the vendor help. I definitely would have screwed that one up!

Great article Jessica, the photos are making me wish I was in an Italian market NOW!

One of my most memorable meals in Venice was cooked by a friend in our apartment, and all the staples procured from the Rialto market (and shops surrounding it.) Risotto with fresh clams, fried squash blossoms stuffed with goat cheese, and an incredible salad. If you are only staying in hotels and eating at restaurants in Italy, you are definitely missing out on an amazing cooking experience.

Oh How I miss those markets. We have stayed in apartment rentals for the last 3 years , and I don't think I would do anything else..only maybe if I was going to a city for a short stay..then a hotel, but normally we have been away fro 10 days, Oh we love shopping there, and trying out everything. Also we have hired a car and toured on a daily basis.
