In my family, we say "rotini" not fusilli! There are regional variations too! :)

@Diane - My impression of pici is that it's hand-made & therefore fresh pasta; I've never seen it for sale in a dried form anywhere. You might contact Judy Witts (whose article I link to at the end of my article above), who's been living in Tuscany for more than 20 years!

you forgot penne!
and a LOT of other types, but penne is really very common. 'maccheroni' is never used in italy.

Hi!

I'm Andrew, from Milan, and I approve EVERY WORD OF THIS ARTICLE.

100% true, description and translation are accurate, even if you mentioned Cannelloni and forgot Lasagne :P (they are both baked pasta after all!!)

So: VERY VERY GOOD ARTICLE, some people watch Soprano's and think we have ziti for breakfast :P Ziti are very rare and used pretty much only in south Italy.. We usually have spaghetti or fusilli.

Remember:
North Italy = Rice, Risotto, Polenta, Meat Stew, Focaccia, Lasagne, Ragù (the TRUE name of "Bolognese Sauce" :D ) & Tasty Wine: Veneto + Lombardia + Piemonte
*Torino, Milano, Venezia, Bologna*

Center: Fiorentina, Trippa, Beans, Carbonara, Amatriciana & Wine: Toscana + Lazio (Chianti etc..)
*Roma, Firenze, Siena are GREAT!*

South: Fish, Pizza, Mozzarella, Cannoli, Pasta, Italy bad stereotype since south is even now the land of mafia (Naples,Palermo) and was the poorest zone since Italy was born, full of emigration and such & Strong Wine (Puglia and Sicilia have very alchoolic wines)
