Come on, people...do you want real gelato!? You must visit its capitol! Rimini.
La Gelateria Romana, the one in Piazza Ferrari, has been in business for over half a century, and a few others are giving it a 'run for its money'! It would be really difficult to comment about Italian gelato without having a real point of reference...the gelato made in Rimini.

Festival del Gelato is my favorite in Florence, though I haven't tried Perche' No? yet. I liked Vivoli, but I still like Festival better. :)

The best gelato I've had in Italy was from Cremeria de Montefiore near the Pantheon in Rome. In Florence Perche’ No? was my favorite. Other favorites of mine are Blue Ice in Rome and Festival del Gelato and Vivoli in Florence.

Thanks for your recommendation, Arthur! I did have gelato at Vivoli the last time I was in Florence; I liked it, but it wasn't my favorite gelateria in the city. The portions were too small for my tastes there, too - especially for the price. But yes, the flavors at Vivoli are very fresh & real.

My own best experience in gelato was Vivoli in Firenze
Via Isola delle Stinche. It is truly the best I have ever had.
I also got a cookbook for gelato, for those of you who, as I, are unable to just pop on over to Italia.
It is : Gelato, sorbet and ice cream
        by Elsa Petersen-Schelpelern
Publisher: Ryland Peters and Small, Inc
I make the traditional base out of it, add 4 tbsp of Creme de Cacao to it (Per Gelato di Strega recipe) and shave chocolate bits over it with a microplane. Ecco Straciatella (There you have it, straciatella). It tastes like what I remember from Vivoli
Best of luck to you
