My wife and I went all over Italy for our honeymoon in September 2010 and we ate gelato like it was our job. When we were in Florence, we stayed at the Grand Hotel Cavour and we were lucky enough to have this gelato shop around the corner. With what seemed like a bazillion different flavors and some of the best-tasting gelato we had in Italy, this place really knocked our socks off. If you’re going to be in Florence and have a craving for gelato, this is a must-see.

I am beyond thrilled to find out that my favorite gelato shop is still in business. My first visit was in 1986, when I was but a whelp. I worked my way through about 27 of the flavors on that and subsequent visits.

I’ll be in Florence on a day trip in a few weeks. I’m looking forward to it.

I don’t want to fan the flames of disagreement, but Dante does mention an excellent gelateria — Perche’No? has excellent pink grapefruit gelato. Luckily, I can eat at least 3-5 scoops of gelato per day, so I’m happy to make the rounds, too!

Thanks for the note, Dante… I’ve eaten at Festival many times, and never been dissatisfied – and I’m a pretty picky gelato consumer. So, obviously, I disagree – but I’m all for trying as many gelato shops as possible!

I used to live in Florence, and I feel I have to warn people away from this; Festival del Gelato is just awful. Che schifo. It’s tacky and touristy, and offers a product that is questionable at best. Go a block down Calzaiuoli to Perche’ No?. While there is less of a selection, the flavors are infinitely better than the merda that is peddled at Festival.

I’m glad you got to go to Festival del Gelato, Jules, but I’m sad to report that in all my trips to that gelateria (and I go several times per trip to Florence), I’ve NEVER seen the spinach or carrot flavors. I really should ask them one of these trips, “Hey, what’s with the false advertising out there?” I swear, if anyone could make spinach gelato tasty, it’s them – and I’d be first in line to try it if it were on offer.
