pisaItaly has been a tourism hotspot for centuries – and you can see why. Certainly, any country that can claim the seat of the Roman Empire, the birthplace of the Renaissance and the mothership of Catholocism is a country worth visiting. Unfortunately, visiting Italy is getting more and more expensive – especially as the Euro gets stronger. Some people might just pay whatever the going rate is, but if you are on a budget that is not necessarily an option. The good news is that there are ways to see Italy without spending a fortune.

The best way to save money when you travel is to skip the fancy Italy hotels and stay in a hostel in Italy. Your accommodation is generally going to be the second most costly item in your travel budget, after your airfare, so sleeping cheap can really add up. The good news is that you will be able to find all kinds of budget accommodations in Italy, although they will not always be called hostels.

Hostels: Not Just for Kids

First, however, we need to dispel a common myth – that hostels are only for young people. While “youth hostels” of the past might have been geared more toward the youth, very few hostels these days even have age restrictions. Most are just ideal places to stay for any budget-minded traveler, no matter your age – even if the property has the words “youth hostel” in their name, that still does not mean there is an age limit! Just read the Italy hostel descriptions to be sure, but more than likely all you will find are great prices.

Hostels today are not just a way to save money, however – they are also great for people who like to meet other travelers. Hostels can be especially nice if you are traveling alone and want to meet up with people in a city you do not know. You might be able to exchange travel tips and share a meal, making your visit more memorable. And if the idea of a dorm style room is not appealing to you, do not worry – most hostels these days also have a selection of private rooms (some with private bathrooms) as well.

“Hostels” in Italy Aren’t Always Called Hostels

In Italy in particular, budget accommodations can be called hostels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts or “agriturismo” – that last one is generally a room for rent in a farmhouse on a real working farm, where you can see what real Italian life is like. These can be more challenging to reach, as they are not in city centers, but they are sometimes on bus routes and sometimes the owners will be able to pick you up in the nearest town. When browsing the Italy hostel descriptions, keep an eye out for the word “agriturismo” if this sounds appealing to you.

As is the case elsewhere, the closer a hostel in Italy is to the main sights in that city, the more expensive it will be. If you can afford to be right in the middle of everything and you do not want to worry about much public transportation, there are plenty of hostels to choose from in the city centers. If, on the other hand, you are on a tighter budget and you do not mind figuring out the local bus system or renting a bicycle, choosing a hostel further from the city center can be a real money-saving option.
