The hilltop city of Macerata in Le Marche is, like many historic cities in Italy, two towns in one. On the hill you’ll find the historic city itself, and further down the hill you’ll find a more modern version of the city. Macerata isn’t a huge place, but for the most atmospheric experience (especially during a short stay) it’s usually more pleasant to stay in the historic city.
Of course, staying in an historic center often means higher prices on accommodation – so finding a budget-friendly bed is important. In addition to the hostels in Macerata, don’t overlook the many small budget hotels in the city – they’re also indicated on the map below, and although they won’t have dorm rooms they’ll be easy on the wallet.
