Tuscany may get most of the press, but the hilltop city of Perugia in Umbria has long been a magnet for visitors. In fact, it’s one of the top destinations for students learning Italian, as there’s a famous university in the city. Perugia is also home to a world-famous chocolate festival that takes over the city each October. More recently it’s been in the news for less pleasant reasons, as the setting for the Amanda Knox trial, but anyone who’s been to Perugia will tell you that the city is about much more than that story – even today.
Much of Perugia is on top of one of those quintessential Umbrian hills, but there are buildings all down the sides of the hill as well. Note where the hotels you’re considering are, in case you’ll be stuck doing lots of uphill and downhill walking to get where you want to go.
