Italy News
So, it’s probably not the stuff you’d find on the front page of the dailies in Italy, but it’s Italian news nonetheless.

It’s election day in Italy today! Well, the first of two (April 13-14). So, if you’re even vaguely curious about the Italian elections, you can read the party platforms and see who you might have voted for.
Venice might be seriously expensive, but the famous Harry’s Bar is offering “discounts to ‘poor’ Americans,” so that should help.

Italian Supreme Court Rules Nepotism Illegal
I keep re-reading this article, and I still can’t stop shaking my head in disbelief:
Italy’s Supreme Court has ruled that nepotism is an offence, despite the almost universally held belief that it is impossible to get a job in the country without a “raccomandazione” or friendly word, from a relative.
That’s right, the Supreme Court in Italy has actually decided that nepotism is illegal. They even sentenced the offenders in the case to 14-21 months in prison.

NPR Story on Upcoming Italian Elections
As I’ve mentioned, I’m going to be in Italy for the next six weeks, during which there is likely to be lots of campaigning for the upcoming April election. I keep reading articles I find about the election, but the whole process still kind of eludes me. I get it on a grand scale, from the 35,000-foot viewpoint, but the closer I get the more confusing it becomes.
At any rate, the very excellent Sylvia Poggioli had a good story on NPR this morning talking about the elections - she’s particularly focused on the two men who are vying for …

Dioxin Found in Some Buffalo Mozzarella
Just a quick note to mention that if you’re in Italy right now, there may be an excuse not to splurge on the “upgrade” to buffalo mozzarella on that pizza you’re ordering:
Over the past week, Italian authorities have searched dozens of buffalo dairies and seized milk samples for tests after higher-than-permitted levels of dioxin were discovered in products from 29 mozzarella makers, news reports said.
