Italy Photo of the Week: Quiet Canal (or Not)
For this Italy photo of the week, we’re in Venice:
![]()
In my opinion, Venice is endlessly photogenic. And not every picture has to have dozens of tourists in it, either. My most recent visit was at the end of February, and although it was still crowded there were moments of peaceful bliss in little side streets and quiet corners - and moments like that can be found anytime. You just have to be patient and get off the tourist track… And if you can’t find the ideal moment of peaceful bliss, you can still make your photographs …

Italy Photo of the Week: Ravenna Mosaics
For this Italy photo of the week, we’re in Ravenna:
![]()
Ravenna is one of those places you may not need to spend more than a couple of hours - but if you like the Byzantine mosaics of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, you should do yourself the favor of a two-hour tour of Ravenna. You can reach the city by train as a day-trip from Venice, or en route between Venice and points south. I snapped this picture in San Vitale church, my favorite of the churches in Ravenna - although it’s pretty nondescript from the outside, the …

Italy Photo of the Week: Florence Sunbathers
For this Italy photo of the week, we’re in Florence:
![]()
Ordinarily, the Piazza della Signoria (pictured here) is one of those places that Italian decorum dictates should not be thought of as a place to sit around or sunbathe. This grand piazza is always great for people watching, but the few uniformed police officers who regularly patrol it should, if they’re strictly following orders, be telling these loungers to move along. But they weren’t. On this trip I spent four days in Florence, and I never saw people lounging around like this except on the occasion when I …

Italy Photo of the Week: Queens of the Piazza

For this Italy photo of the week, we’re in Bologna:

This is easily one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken in Italy. In the background you see the Piazza Maggiore, Bologna’s main square, and these ladies were sitting at that table just on the edge of the square for hours - talking, laughing, and greeting just about every passerby. The husband nicknamed them “The Queens of the Piazza.” I imagined that they met at that cafe, at that very same table, every morning (or at …

Italy Photo of the Week: Trastevere Dog
For this Italy photo of the week, we’re in Rome:
![]()
We’re in the Trastevere neighborhood in Rome, actually - and in the piazza in front of Santa Maria in Trastevere church to be exact. I was strolling through the Trastevere (which I loved, as it was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city) when I saw this little dog batting an empty water bottle around like a soccer ball. He was clearly playing with it, but got very protective anytime another dog would come close - that’s when he’d pick it …

First Italy Photo Contest Winner Announced!
After much consideration, both by me and several of my coworkers, the winner for the first Italy Logue photo contest has been decided. It was a difficult choice, as all the photographs submitted are excellent and capture something special about Italy - but in the end, only one winner could be chosen. So, congratulations to Francesca M., who took the winning shot in Venice!

Francesca’s photograph was taken on a quiet Venetian canal in October 2006, and Francesca says about the photo:
It’s probably my favorite photo from Italy because I absolutely loved Venice! I expected to hate it, or maybe I just had really low expectations because I’d heard/read so many negative things about it. But I fell in love with the city and wish we’d planned to spend more time there on that trip.

Italy Photo of the Week: Soccer "Injury" at San Siro
You’ve only got one week left to enter the Italy Photo Contest, so send in your entries by Monday, March 31!
For this Italy photo of the week, we’re in Milan:
![]()
More specifically, we’re in Milan’s mammoth soccer stadium, San Siro for the second of two A.C. Milan games I saw during my stay in the city. Milan didn’t win either game, which was disappointing, but at least my favorite player actually played in the second game. (As a bonus, he’s actually in this photo!) This picture was taken late in the 2nd half, when the …

Italy Photo of the Week: Turin Door Knocker
For this Italy photo of the week, we’re in Turin:
![]()
Yes, you’re looking at the door-knocker on some random building entrance in the city of Turin. Yes, there are arguably plenty of things in Turin that are more worthy of being singled out for a photo, and it’s extremely unlikely that someone’s going to organize a “Tour of Italy’s Great Door Knockers” anytime soon. So why am I highlighting this door knocker in Turin? Because for me, both travel and photography are about focusing on the little things as much as the big things. They’re both about finding …

Bonus Italy Photo of the Week: Asolo Gate
Don’t forget to send your photo entries into our Italy Photo Contest!
For this Italy photo of the week, we are in Asolo:
![]()
Asolo is a tiny hilltop town north of Venice. I’m not convinced there’s a perfectly flat street in the entire town, it’s so perched on top of a hill. At its very top is a castle ruin, and I spotted this gate en route to the castle. I loved this gate… I’m sure if I were the owner of the gate it would drive me nuts, half falling apart every time I tried to open …
