Earlier this summer, our traveling party of 4 went through much of this same analysis to decide how we would travel from Tuscany to Croatia. Here's what we did:

We drove our rental car from Tuscany to Ancona, took the overnight Jadralina ferry to Split. We opted for cabins with a shower, deciding that we just weren't up to roughing it on a deck chair for the 9 hour trip. The cabins are billed as "luxury" but are little more than up and down berths with a shower and private toilet.

The ferry arrived in Split about 7 am, and w spent the morning exploring, then took a scheduled bus to Dubrovnik. The bus was comfortable, but it's still another 4-5 hours to get to Dubrovnik. On the return trip, we did the same travel plan.

I would NOT take this approach again! We spent way too much time (and money) in transit, and while we did get to see a bit of the country that we might not otherwise have seen, I don't think there was enough added value to recommend it. Next year, I suspect we will add on Croatia and the beginning or end of a trip, flying there from one of the major airports.
