Good advice about booking train reservations in advance - especially for a 'bridge weekend'. May 1st is celebrated throughout Europe so that holds true for France as well. May I also suggest making sure to do any banking or mailing of packages before May 1st because all government offices will be closed. (There may also be May 1st parades that would block some city traffic for those of you taking cabs or driving car rentals) but public transport normally runs fine.
