Just wanted to second your recommendation for VeniceConnected.com; I don’t think enough folks realize what savings there are and how easy it is to take adavantage of them (seven days or more in advance of departure). The less-busy the city, the bigger the discounts on vaporetto passes, museum passes, and more.

Yes, there is No smell. Who keeps telling that falsehood?

Oh, gracious. St. Mark’s is the craziest place I’ve ever seen. Wall to wall folks.

It is very amazing how little you have to go away from the tourist track to find peace and quiet. I spent two days almost alone wandering off the track and ended up with some really great photos.

I’m still working on finding good food, though. Most is acceptable, but not anything great.

Very nice article. You can’t satisfy every visitor, even as amazing as Venice. It’s nice to read fair but encouraging information before visiting. Another way to avoid disappointment, I think, is to find a good and reliable Venice guide to show around. Locals are the best to share their passion and knowledge on a city where they live.

I was pleased to find that there was not any bad smell from the canals. After I returned from Venice friends did ask if the canals smelled bad because they have heard so many bad comments about it. I wonder who keeps passing that bad smell rumor around?

I agree Venice is truly an amazing place and you’ve dispelled/confirmed all the right things. Yes it is expensive, no its not smelly, Yes it is crowded and Yes it is best seen on foot. Great piece!

Hi,
I’m really, really glad to hear someone else emphasize the fact that Venice does not smell. I also have been there in the heat of summer and no smell. No smell in November either when I luckily missed the high water by a week. I also would recommend the discount card you mentioned. On top of the waterbus and museum discounts, the card I bought allowed a couple of free entrances into the very few and far between public WC’s there. This proved convenient once or twice.
