I was at the Museums today. They were open early for tour groups, almost all of which skipped the line, but they public line starting moving at 9 and I was inside by 9:15. The tours they try to sell you on the street are 45-50 Euro vs 15 for a ticket and 7 more for an audio guide which was very useful.

People could also do a reservation online and print it out, and skip the line. I hadn’t done this, but certainly will try to find it for next time.

I got a note from an Italy Logue reader called Joan who said:

“A very important point about visiting the Vatican Museums is the fact that the early entry (8:45 to 10 am) is restricted to tour groups approved by the Vatican. Individuals may only enter after 10 am so line will, of course, be very long even into November when I was last there. “Also modest dress is ALWAYS required in the museums as well as the basilica. I have seen too many people in even dressy bermuda shorts turned away. When I was at the Vatican Museums last fall photography was allowed without flash except in the Sistine Chapel. The latter is because of the deal made with the Japanese film company that paid for the restoration there. I suppose the rules could have changed since last fall because in Italy change like that is often a given.”
