Most rail passes are for non-consecutive days - 3 days anytime during the time when the pass is valid - but there are a few that are for consecutive days. If you check out BootsnAll's, Eurail Pass page, it should be clearly indicated on each pass which one it is:
http://www.bootsnall.com/eurail/

For the most part, the ones that are for consecutive days are Eurail Passes for all of Europe (not any one country) and are for 15+ days of travel.

Jessica, When you talk about a rail pass for say 3 days in 2 months time. Do they have to be 3 days in a row once you start using it or 3 different days throughout the month. Kim

this is so useful! It's helping me figure out train stuff. I was about to rent a car, but think we'll get a pass. I'm going to email your train pass guy. Thanks so much!

It sounds like you didn't really need this article, Michelle, self-confessed math-geek! :) I needed the assistance of my math-geek colleague to help me with all of this - so even though I know lots of people out there could figure it out on their own, the fact that I couldn't meant that at least a few others might find the information helpful. ;)

And good points about the discounts available - there are so many other great perks that come with a railpass, if it makes sense to get one then you get those as a bonus.

Hi Jessica,
This is exactly the article I needed 18 months ago when I was planning our trip to Italy!!
Fortunately, I'm a math-geek anyway so I fired up my Excel and worked out the niggly details just as you suggest myself. For families, the Saver fares are great and there are sometimes additional family discounts which you can take advantage of too - we only found out about these when we got there but they applied to all our train trips.
