Where to Eat in Venice

Venice is notorious for serving up all kinds of bad food. People don’t go to Venice for the cuisine, they go for the fairy tale ambience of a floating city, so there’s little to no incentive for restaurateurs to produce anything above what’s adequate and edible (these are not compliments when you’re talking about food).

But people still live in Venice, right? Are they forced to eat bad food when they go out in their own city? Of course not - it would be silly to assume that every single restaurant in Venice is awful or even meant for tourists. The main trick to eating well in Venice is to get away from tourists and eat like the locals do.

The foodie website Chowhound has a long thread here about where to eat in Venice - it starts with an impressive list of not only places to eat around Venice and the surrounding islands, but also with sometimes lengthy reviews of the restaurants, the service and the prices. It’s an excellent reference point - just keep in mind that things change from year to year in the restaurant business, and everyone’s opinion is going to be different, so check the recommended places out to make sure they look good to you as well. And here’s another website with some higher-end restaurant tips, including this gem - “eat where the gondoliers eat.” Brilliant.

And if you still don’t find a sublime meal in Venice, don’t worry - there’s much more of Italy for your palate to explore. Enjoy Venice for what it is and you’ll still have a great time.
