Yes, all the treasure-hunting is done on foot. And it’s my understanding that you can use your American phone (assuming it works in Italy), but you’ll be charged for each SMS message you send and receive – so be aware of how much those cost on your American phone before you use it in Italy.

So do you do all of this treasure hunting on foot? Also, I noticed a post that says you need to have an Italian phone number….so I guess when we visit from America it won’t be possible to play using our US phone plans?

Unfortunately, Ben, you’re right – there is a new “sofa mode” with some of the cities, but it still requires a cell phone and sending/receiving SMS messages to/from an Italian phone number.

So if I don’t have a cell phone with me (I don’t intend to bring a cell phone to go on vacation) or any device to send/receive SMS message then I can’t play the game, right?

Hi, Bruce:

You can choose how long you want to play the game, and the system then tailors the game to suit the amount of time you have to spend playing. I don’t know for sure what all the choices are for game duration, but on the whaiwhai site it says:

“If you want to start right away, simply type your name. If you want a customized experience, you can also type the number of hours you want to play for, level of difficulty and where you want to start from.”

Any idea how long it takes to play this game? My daughter would really like this, but I want to be sure that we have enough time to do it. She’ll be very unhappy if we pull her away before she has a chance to solve the puzzle.
