Great post!

I read in this month's (April 2009) National Geographic Traveler magazine that the Italian government has declared Pompeii in a state of danger. National Geographic Traveler online does not seem to have published the article (I couldn't find it, anyway), but seems like last summer CNN published a story about this.

Italy really has more than its fair share of ancient and significant artifacts to protect, doesn't it!!

I fulfilled a lifelong dream by visiting these sites last Easter. You are quite right in that you should do one per day. Pompeii is way too expansive to see it in less than 3-4 hours. As for Herculaneum, I enjoyed it much better because it was more manageable to visit. I also liked it more because it showed how people lived outside of the city. This was the "suburbs/vacation area."
