For some people, “getting away” to the Amalfi Coast for an Italian holiday isn’t “away” enough. Ischia is a volcanic island, and what it's known for is hot water. Thermal springs bubble up all over it, so there are spa parks built around hot pools, and plenty of hotels have thermal pools of their own. The Aragonese Castle sits on a rock off Ischia Ponte, joined to the island by a causeway, and it's worth the climb.

The dish to order is coniglio all'ischitana, rabbit stewed with tomatoes and herbs. Ferries and hydrofoils run to Ischia from Naples and from Pozzuoli, and the island's buses loop around the coast, so you don't need a car.
