Hotels in Lucca

Lucca is one of the highlights of a trip through the small towns of Tuscany - its old city walls are its defining feature, and ring a beautiful historic city center. You don’t necessarily need a long time to explore the city, but this is the kind of place where you’ll benefit from spending at least one night to enjoy the mornings and evenings when the day trippers aren’t there.
That historic center of Lucca is quite small, and the number of budget-friendly hotels inside the walls is also small - but if you can get a room in one of those hotels you’ll enjoy the feeling of being in the old city when it’s quiet.

You can walk or bike the whole ring of the walls, about 4 km, on a wide tree-lined path along the top, and that's the best way to spend your first evening. Inside, climb the Torre Guinigi, which has holm oaks growing out of its roof, and wander into Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, an oval square built over the outline of a Roman amphitheater. Giacomo Puccini was born here, and you'll see concert posters for his music all year.

Lucca is on the regional rail line from Florence and is about half an hour from Pisa, so it's easy to reach without a car. Try tortelli lucchesi, pasta stuffed with meat and served with a meat sauce.
