Italy Travel News 01/21/2011

  • My Favorite SouvenirsMy friend Chris of the Amateur Traveler & This Week in Travel podcasts published a guest post I sent him not long ago, about some of my favorite souvenirs I’ve bought while traveling. My very favorite ever is from Italy – of course!
  • Air Italy FlightsFrom what I can tell, Air Italy is mainly a charter airline in Europe… But it’s been around for a few years, so why have I never heard of it before? Anyone ever flown on Air Italy or know anything about it?
  • Milan Italy for the First-Time VisitorMy friend Kathy at Dream of Italy asked me to write about what to see and do in Milan if someone had never been before, and here’s what I sent her. Do you think I missed anything that should be included?
  • Rome QuizThere’s another National Geographic quiz a few links down on the Amalfi Coast, so try your hand at that one after you’ve seen how well you know Rome! (via @MyMelange on Twitter)
  • Tim Hayward at an Italian street marketAwesome little video of an Italian market in the Molise region – stay tuned to the end, there’s a cute little story about how the mushroom guy makes sure the mushrooms he’s picked aren’t the bad kind. (via @MyMelange on Twitter)
  • Starbucks apre a MilanoUntil @robbin_g on Twitter sent me this link, I had no idea Starbucks had finally cracked its way into the Italian market. Evidently, there’s a Starbucks in Milan (opened in late 2010), and they’re planning to open a store in Rome in 2011. Has anyone been to the Milan Starbucks?
  • Amalfi Coast QuizThink you know about the Amalfi Coast? Here’s a quiz from the people at National Geographic to test that knowledge. (via @MyMelange on Twitter)
  • Italians Voted the Sexiest, most Popular People in the WorldThis survey apparently ranks Italians as the world’s sexiest people, and shows that non-Italian Europeans would prefer to be Italian if they had a choice. File under “duh.” (via @vespadiaries on Twitter)
  • Vatican Warned Bishops Not to Report Child AbuseWell, oopsie, Vatican. Sounds like somebody back in 1997 didn’t get the memo to shred that memo about telling bishops in Ireland to not report priests who were suspected of child abuse.
  • Wiretaps of Berlusconi’s Teenage Friend Add to ScandalAs if Berlusconi wasn’t already having enough PR problems, there’s more. Evidently the teenage stripper called “Ruby” isn’t the only teenage (and underage) girl Italy’s Prime Minister has gotten close to recently. That is, if we’re to believe the wiretaps. (Which we do.) • Caligula’s tomb foundThis is a bad news/good news story. The bad news? Some horrid person was attempting to smuggle a statue of infamous Roman emperor Caligula out of the spot where he’d found it. The good news? Italian police caught him, and the place where he’d found the statue – a place archaeologists hadn’t discovered – is now believed to be Caligula’s tomb. (via @LifeinSicily on Twitter)
