Should you use a travel agent for Italy? For a first trip to Rome, Florence and Venice, probably not. Trains, hotels and museum tickets are all bookable online, and you can plan that trip yourself in an evening or two with our guide to creating the perfect Italy itinerary.

A good Italy specialist earns the fee when the trip gets complicated: a two-week loop through Puglia and Basilicata with drivers, a family of eight across three regions, a honeymoon where every hotel has to be right, or a trip where you simply don't have the time to spend 20 evenings on booking sites. The other thing you're paying for is someone to fix it when a strike cancels your train or a hotel loses your booking, and in Italy that happens.

Italy specialists worth a call

Every company below was checked in September 2026 for a current, dated signal: a 2026 industry award, recent verified reviews, or 2026 and 2027 departures on sale.

Custom planners

The Italian Concierge is Joyce Falcone's firm, and it has been on Travel + Leisure's A-List of top travel advisors for 18 years running, most recently in February 2026. It plans high-end custom itineraries, villa and hotel stays, honeymoons and group trips, including unlisted villas you can't book on your own. Expect luxury pricing. Its sister company, The Provence Concierge, handles France if you're combining the two.

Discover Your Italy (FuorITinerario in Italian) was founded by Matteo Della Grazia and Daniela Mencarelli and runs from offices in Perugia and Milan. It made the Travel + Leisure A-List for the ninth year in 2026. The appeal is a company that lives in Italy and builds trips around local people and less obvious places, which makes it a natural pick for Umbria, where it's based, and for regions most foreign agencies barely know.

Italy Vacation Specialists is an Italy-based team that designs private trips with its own network of English-speaking drivers and guides, anywhere in Italy. It holds a 5.0 rating on Tripadvisor across more than 100 reviews, the newest from September 2026. It's a good fit if you want a driver-and-guide trip without the full luxury price tag.

If you'd rather join a tour

An agent books a trip around you. A tour operator puts you on a trip it already runs. For first-timers who want everything handled, a well-run group tour is often the better deal.

Perillo Tours has run Italy tours since 1945 and is still family-owned, now in its third generation. It sells fully escorted tours (its off-season "Marco Polo" tour is listed from $3,595 for 2027) and Perillo Custom Vacations, where you build an independent trip with its planning tool.

Rick Steves' Europe runs nine Italy tours for 2026 and 2027, from a 7-day Best of Rome to a 17-day Best of Italy, including Sicily, Tuscany, the south and a "Village Italy" tour. Groups are small, hotels are central, sightseeing and guides are included, and airfare isn't. Prices run from roughly $2,750 to $6,800 a person for 2027.

If you only want expert help for a morning or two, not a whole trip, a guided walk is the middle ground. Context Travel runs small-group and private tours with art historians and archaeologists in 14 Italian cities, with museum tickets included.

How to judge any agent

• Ask where they've been lately. A real specialist has been to Italy in the past year and can tell you which hotel just changed hands. If they can't name the hotel they'd put you in in Florence and why, keep looking.
• Ask how they're paid. Some charge a planning fee, some earn commission from hotels and suppliers, and many do both. Either is fine. Not knowing is not.
• Ask what happens when something goes wrong. You want a phone number that someone answers while you're in Italy, not an email address that replies on Monday.
• Look for outside checks. Travel + Leisure's annual A-List, membership in the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), and recent reviews on independent sites all count. A website with a 2019 copyright date and no reviews does not.
