Italy Photo of the Week: David

For this Italy photo of the week, we’re in Florence:

david

Michelangelo’s David is, perhaps, one of the most famous images of Florence. And yet the one that’s outside the Palazzo Vecchio – the one everyone poses in front of for photos, and the one pictured above – is only one of three Davids in the city (at least there’s only three I know of – and that’s not counting all the crappy souvenirs you can buy of David statues, either). The real Michelangelo masterpiece, which once stood in this spot at the door of the Palazzo Vecchio, is now safely indoors in the Galleria dell’Accademia. The copy in this photo occupies the original statue’s place, overlooking the Piazza della Signoria and gazing toward the Uffizi Gallery. The third David stands atop the Piazzale Michelangelo, with a commanding view of the entire city of Florence beneath his feet.

When you visit Florence, be sure to get your photo taken with the David who guards the Palazzo Vecchio’s door – but don’t be fooled into thinking he’s the real thing.
