Luggage Storage in Italy Train Stations

Checked out of your hotel at 10am with a train at 6pm? Stopping in Bologna or Verona for an afternoon between two cities? The question readers ask most often in high season is simple: can I leave my bags at the train station in Italy?

At the big stations, yes. At small ones, usually not. Here's how it works.

Staffed desks, not lockers

Coin lockers mostly disappeared from European stations years ago for security reasons. Italy's big stations replaced them with a staffed left-luggage desk (deposito bagagli): you hand your bag over the counter, it's tagged, and you collect it later with your receipt. It costs a bit more than a locker used to, but you're never stuck because every locker is full.

Which stations have left luggage

The desks at the main stations are run by KiPoint under the KiBag name. Its list covers 13 stations:

• Bari Centrale
• Bologna Centrale
• Firenze Santa Maria Novella
• Genova Brignole and Genova Principe
• Milano Centrale
• Napoli Centrale
• Palermo Centrale
• Roma Termini
• Torino Porta Nuova
• Venezia Mestre and Venezia Santa Lucia
• Verona Porta Nuova

Prices start at about 6 euros a bag in 2026, and the fee includes use of the station toilets. Longer stays cost more; the site lists the rates. Check KiBag's site for each desk's opening hours before you plan around it, because hours vary by station.

Everywhere else

Smaller stations mostly have nothing. Pisa Centrale isn't on KiBag's list, for instance, and neither are the Cinque Terre villages or most hill-town stations. Your options there:

• Luggage-storage apps. Several apps let you book space in shops, bars and hotels near stations, with a fixed daily price per bag. Coverage is good in the tourist cities and patchy elsewhere, so check the app for your exact stop before you rely on it.
• Your hotel. Nearly every hotel will hold bags for guests after check-out, usually free. It's the easiest option if your hotel is on your way to the station.

Tips

• Carry ID. Left-luggage desks can ask for photo ID when you drop off, and you must carry it in Italy anyway.
• Take out your valuables. Passport, cash, laptop and medicines stay with you.
• Allow time at pickup. Summer lines at Roma Termini, Firenze SMN and Venezia Santa Lucia can be long. Don't collect your bag five minutes before your train.
