Hostels in Matera
· Updated · BootsnAll
The region of Basilicata may be overlooked by many visitors to Italy, but those who do go to Basilicata most often do so in order to visit Matera. It’s a place somewhat caught in time - so much so that it’s been used as the backdrop for several films that were set 2,000+ years ago.
Matera’s famous Sassi, the old cave dwellings carved into the ravine, were emptied by the government in the 1950s. Today many of those caves are homes again, along with restaurants and a lot of cave hotels, so sleeping in one isn’t hard to arrange, but it’s rarely the cheapest option. If money is tight, your best bet is to find a hostel in Matera or a small, budget hotel in the historic center.
