Hotels in Cagliari

If Sicily remains off the radar of most tourists, Sardinia is even further off the beaten path. It’s closer to France (in the form of Corsica) than it is to Italy’s mainland, and it’s mostly rugged interior means that it’s a haven for outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking. This island is also lined with some of Italy’s best beaches, so during August this is where many Italians go for their own summer holidays.
Cagliari is one of the major cities on the island of Sardinia, and although it’s relatively easy to find a place to stay in the off-season, it can be anything but easy to find a vacancy in August. In other words, plan well in advance to get a good deal on a hotel in Cagliari!

Cagliari climbs from its port up to the Castello, the walled old quarter, where the terrace of the Bastione di Saint Remy gives you the whole city and the bay at sunset. Poetto beach runs for miles along the coast a city bus ride from the center, and the Molentargius lagoon behind it is home to pink flamingos for much of the year. Eat fregola (small toasted pasta, often cooked with clams), culurgiones (potato and pecorino dumplings), bottarga and seadas, a fried pastry filled with cheese and topped with honey. If you can be here on May 1, thousands of people in traditional Sardinian dress walk through town in the procession for Sant’Efisio.

Cagliari-Elmas airport has a train into the city, and overnight ferries arrive from Civitavecchia (Rome’s port) and Naples.
