Catania might not be the most famous city on the island of Sicily – that honor is typically reserved for Palermo – but it’s home to the busiest airport on the island and it’s a major port city. Catania is right at the base of Mt. Etna (so it’s a great base from which to explore the volcano) and not far from the resort city of Taormina, either. It can be quite hot to visit during the summer, but if you’re planning a trip in the shoulder seasons or even the winter you could luck out with spectacular weather.
