Catania might not be the most famous city on the island of Sicily - that honor is typically reserved for Palermo - but it’s home to the busiest airport on the island and it’s a major port city. Catania is right at the base of Mt. Etna (so it’s a great base from which to explore the volcano) and not far from the resort city of Taormina, either. It can be quite hot to visit during the summer, but if you’re planning a trip in the shoulder seasons or even the winter you could luck out with spectacular weather.

Catania was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in black lava stone and pale limestone, and its baroque center is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the other late-baroque towns of southeastern Sicily. Start at Piazza del Duomo, where the fountain holds a lava-stone elephant locals call “u Liotru,” then walk around the corner to La Pescheria, the fish market that takes over the streets every morning except Sunday. This is the home of pasta alla Norma, with eggplant and salted ricotta, and the place to eat granita with a brioche for breakfast. Alibus shuttles run between the airport and the center, and trains and buses go to Taormina and Siracusa, as well as up the slopes of Etna.
