Hotels in Como

Who doesn’t fancy a stay on an Italian lake? The name Lake Como conjures up all kinds of glamorous images, but if you’re traveling on a budget you might think the hotels in Como are all out of your price range. Yes, many of the hotels - especially the ones with lake-front views - will cost too much for most budget travelers to consider. But there are a few budget-friendly places you can stay, especially if you don’t mind walking a bit to get to the lake.

Como sits at the southern tip of the lake’s western arm, and it’s more of a real town than the villages further up the shore. Walk the lakefront out to Villa Olmo, look into the Duomo, and ride the funicular up to Brunate for a view down the lake. Como made its fortune weaving silk, and you’ll see scarves and ties for sale all over the old town. Ferries leave from the waterfront for Bellagio, Varenna and the rest of the lake, so a room in Como gets you the whole lake without lakefront prices. Trains from Milan take about 40 minutes to an hour. If you see risotto with lake perch on a menu, order it.
