The region of Puglia in the heel of Italy’s boot is famous within Italy because of the many beaches that Italians flock to whenever they can. It’s not hard to see why it’s such a beach-oriented area – it’s surrounded on almost all sides by water. The city of Bari is one of the region’s main cities, and it’s both a port city for major cruise ships (many of which dock here on Mediterranean cruises) and a departure/arrival point for ferries to/from places like Greece and Croatia.
Bari is a big city, and there is a decent rail network in the immediate area, but note that not all the Bari hostels listed on the map below are going to be easily accessible without a car. If you’re the kind of budget traveler who’s sticking to public transportation, make sure you choose a hostel that’s in the city and easy to reach from the Bari train station.
