Hotels in Orvieto

Orvieto is an incredibly picturesque hilltop town in Umbria, but it’s also close enough to the Lazio border that it makes an excellent day trip from Rome. Like any great day trip destination, and despite not being as popular as some other towns in Italy, Orvieto changes character when the day trippers aren’t around - so if you want to explore its true charms you’ll stay the night.

The town sits on top of a cliff of volcanic tuff, and the cathedral's gold-and-mosaic facade is what everyone comes to see. Go inside too: Luca Signorelli's Last Judgment frescoes in the San Brizio chapel are some of the best in Italy. Underneath the town is a maze of caves and tunnels you can tour, and the Pozzo di San Patrizio is a deep well with two spiral staircases that never meet.

The local white wine is Orvieto Classico, and you'll find it everywhere. Orvieto is on the main rail line between Rome and Florence, about an hour from Rome, and a funicular climbs from the station up to the old town.
