Hotels in Pescara

While the capital of a region usually turns out to be its largest city, that’s not the case in Abruzzo. Here, the capital is L’Aquila, but the biggest city in the region is the coastal city of Pescara. It’s an important port city as well as a popular beach resort. You may be passing through, or you may be inclined to stay for a few days and soak up the sun. Either way, you’ll need a place to stay!

Pescara is a modern city (much of it was rebuilt after bombing in World War II), so don't come looking for a medieval center. Come for the long sandy beach, the seafront promenade and the Ponte del Mare, a pedestrian and bike bridge over the river mouth. The poet Gabriele D'Annunzio was born here, and his family home is now a museum.

This is the place to eat arrosticini, little skewers of mutton grilled over a long narrow grill, which you'll find all over Abruzzo. Pescara is on the Adriatic rail line between Bologna and Bari, and coaches cross the mountains from Rome.
