Hotels in Ravenna

One of the highlights of many a trip to Venice is staring at the sparkling mosaics on the inside of St. Mark’s Basilica domes - so if you like those mosaics, you’ll want to book a stop in Ravenna. This city in Emilia-Romagna is known for having some of the finest Byzantine mosaics outside what was once known as Byzantium, and they don’t disappoint. It’s a small city center, so easily explored on foot, especially if you find a hotel that’s right in the middle of everything.

Eight of Ravenna's early Christian monuments are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Don't miss the Basilica of San Vitale, the tiny Mausoleum of Galla Placidia with its starry blue ceiling, and Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, where processions of saints line both walls. A combined ticket covers several of them. Dante died in exile here, and his tomb is in the center of town.

Ravenna is about an hour from Bologna by train, and the beaches of the Adriatic coast are a short bus ride away if you want a day off from mosaics.
